Coronavirus: Warrick County schools to go virtual through rest of the year
BOONVILLE, Ind. — Warrick County School Corp. Superintendent Brad Schneider announced Friday that students will finish out the academic year virtually.
The decision was made due to the increasing spread of the coronavirus across the state and country, which has forced several area school corporations to suspend in-person instruction. EVSC has maintained in-person closure through May 1.
And with Governor Eric Holcomb's directives Thursday, urging all Indiana schools to go virtual through May 1, Schneider said the WCSC has set new plans for the remaining school year.
"We just looked at our calendar and wanted to present our parents and teachers with our plan going forward," Schneider said. "Everybody has to understand this could change tomorrow, or it could change next week. It's a fluid situation."
Schneider said the corporation will use a combination of virtual learning and waiver days issued by Gov. Holcomb through the end of the school year on May 20.
WCSC schools will coordinate a date bi-weekly for the return of assignments from virtual learning days and academic packets. Parents will also be directed to pick up learning packets, which will include four days of instructional material for each week.
Schools will receive further information on these materials at a later time.
While school facilities are closed, Schneider said teachers and support staff will continue receiving their regular pay rate.
The WCSC Food and Nutrition Distribution Department will also provide free "grab and go" meals for children 18 years of age and younger. Meal pickup will be available daily between 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m., including Spring Break, for the entire district.
Meals will be available for pick up at the following locations:
Boonville High School – Swimming Doors / Auxiliary Gym
Chandler Elementary – Front Entrance
Oakdale Elementary - North Parking Lot (by Gym)
Sharon Elementary – Back Drop off / pick up Circle
Tecumseh Middle / High - High School front door
Tennyson Elementary – Gym Doors
Schneider said the WCSC will continue to monitor the situation and remain in contact with local and state officials to ensure precautionary steps are met.
"We feel this is in the best interest of our students in keeping them healthy and staff. Our staff, parents, our community, our priority is their health and welfare," he said.
