EVSC schools to host traditional ceremonies for graduating seniors this summer
EVANSVILLE, Ind. — After conducting phone surveys across the district to decide how to honor graduating seniors, the Evansville Vanderburgh School Corp. plans to host traditional commencement celebrations this summer.
Out of the 899 senior families that responded to the survey, 80% favored in-person celebrations to take place in July.
"We're committed to honor these graduates and recognizing these seniors for their accomplishments and to bring closure to this very unique school year," EVSC spokesman Jason Woebkenberg said.
At the moment, Woebkenberg said the plan is for every school to host commencement at their respective outdoor stadiums. The corporation, with help from the board of trustees, will determine the format and restrictions for each ceremony.

However, prevailing health guidelines at the time will determine if and how celebrations ultimately take place.
"Our priority is to ensure that everyone in this community, including our students and families, remain safe," Woebkenberg said. "The health conditions at that time will really dictate how that ceremony will look."
The corporation will remain in close contact with local health officials and continue monitoring state regulations, Woebkenberg said. If the physical ceremony can't take place, EVSC will look to exercise other options.
Specific dates for the ceremonies will be announced at a later time.
