No snow? No problem for indoor snowball fight at Willard Library

EVANSVILLE, Ind. — Dozens of children went toe-to-toe Wednesday at Willard Library during an epic indoor snowball fight.

Despite the day's temperature hitting a high of 61 degrees, Jordyn Sanners and other children fully embraced the winter spirit during Willard's annual event.

They stormed through the lower area of the nearly 135-year-old building, vying for each of their sides to win the indoor battle — nearly breaking a sweat in the process.

Sanners said she and her sisters enjoyed the playful battle.

In addition to the snowball fight, Willard staff also played mini-games and passed out cherry-flavored snow cone treats to the kids at the end of the hour-long program.

Avrien Jimenez brought his 5-year-old daughter to the event with the goal of giving her a unique experience. The Evansville dad said he tries to limit her screen time and likes for her to be more active.

Willard Child Librarian Rhonda Mort said they saw a major boost in participants this year, the second for the event. She said 73 children signed up for the event, which is nearly four times more than last year.

Mort hopes this increase in interest translates to an interest in reading and the historic library and its programming.

"If a parent would bring their child to volunteer, I would love that," she said. "I'm always looking for more volunteers."

Willard Library is open 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Mondays and Tuesdays, 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Wednesdays through Fridays, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays and 1-5 p.m. Sundays. For more information contact Willard Library staff at 812-425-4309 or by email at willard@willard.lib.in.us.
